Liverpool’s Premier League Record at Anfield Against Manchester City

Anfield has been the hardest address in English football for Manchester City to visit.

Liverpool vs Man City has produced title deciders, a seven-goal afternoon and one of the longest away droughts the competition has seen, and the Premier League record on Merseyside sets out the scale of it.

The Overall Record

Liverpool and Manchester City have met 29 times in the Premier League at Anfield. Liverpool have won 18, eight have finished level, and City have won three.

The imbalance is more notable than the raw figures suggest. City spent four seasons outside the top flight in the late 1990s and another in 2001-02, so the fixture has only been an annual event since 2002-03. Most of the record has therefore been built during the strongest period in City’s history.

The Afternoons Liverpool Got It Right

The clash between the two sides on 14 January 2018 remains the benchmark. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring from distance in the ninth minute, Leroy Sane leveled before half-time, and Liverpool then scored three times in nine minutes through Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah. Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan replied inside the last seven minutes, but the 4-3 finish ended City’s unbeaten start to the season.

The pattern repeated on 10 November 2019. Fabinho struck from 25 yards after six minutes, Salah headed in an Andy Robertson cross on 13, and Mane added a third six minutes after the interval. Bernardo Silva pulled one back in a 3-1 defeat that left City nine points behind.

On 16 October 2022, Salah took down an Alisson clearance, spun away from Joao Cancelo, and curled past Ederson in the 76th minute for a 1-0 win.

City’s Three Wins at Anfield

Nicolas Anelka scored both goals on 3 May 2003, the winner arriving in the third minute of injury time after Milan Baros had put Liverpool ahead.

It was City’s first league win at the ground in 22 years.

The second took another 18 years and arrived on 7 February 2021, in an empty stadium. Gundogan opened after the restart, Salah equalized from the penalty spot, then two loose clearances from Alisson let City score twice in three minutes through Gundogan and Raheem Sterling. Phil Foden finished it at 4-1, and Pep Guardiola had his first Anfield win.

The third came on 8 February 2026, the first in front of a crowd since Anelka’s.

The Goalscorers

Mohamed Salah owns the modern chapter of this fixture.  He scored nine goals and created six more against sides managed by Pep Guardiola, more than any other player has managed against a Guardiola team in league football. His wider Anfield return of 109 goals and 46 assists is 155 involvements at one venue, a Premier League record that left him four clear of Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford and Thierry Henry at Highbury.

Ian Rush still holds the club record against City with 15 goals in all competitions. From the visiting side, Bernardo Silva has the odd distinction of having scored at Anfield in 2018, 2019 and 2026.

The Past Three Seasons at Anfield

Three seasons, three different results. On 10 March 2024, John Stones turned in a Kevin De Bruyne corner, and Alexis Mac Allister equalized from the spot after the interval for a 1-1 draw, the last Premier League meeting between Jurgen Klopp and Guardiola. On 1 December 2024, Cody Gakpo converted a Salah pass and Salah added a penalty on 78 minutes in a 2-0 win that put Liverpool nine points clear.

Then the run broke. On 8 February 2026, Dominik Szoboszlai’s long-range free kick put Liverpool ahead in the 74th minute, Bernardo Silva leveled in the 84th, and Erling Haaland scored a stoppage-time penalty. Szoboszlai was sent off in the closing seconds. It was City’s first league double over Liverpool since 1936-37.

That spread is why football betting markets on this fixture tend to move on team news and current form rather than on the head-to-head. Liverpool have won 18 of 29 home Premier League meetings against City.

City have taken four points from their last three visits. Both are accurate, but only one is recent.
