Red Bull New York Has a U20 Problem
In the qualification for the U20 World Cup and the Olympics, Red Bull New York has a problem: no player has been selected.
This is an odd statistic, as about 71% of the roster comes from the MLS and its academy teams, but there are none from Red Bull New York.
In this team, there were multiple players from the MLS, but none came from the Red Bull Academy, something the team prides itself on. For instance, the team that gave the most players to the national team was the Los Angeles Galaxy with two.
Other teams that gave their prospects to the team were Chicago Football Club (the coach was in their ranks before accepting the U19 job), Inter Miami Football Club (which is last or second to last in MLS Next Pro), Orlando City Soccer Club, Minnesota United, Football Club Dallas, Columbus Crew, Saint Louis CITY Football Club, Charlotte Football Club, and Atlanta United.
Even teams in the USL Championship had representation like Louisville City and Charleston Battery. In a major surprise, the college ranks had a representative from Furman.
Red Bull has three players who were eligible to play for this team.
These three are Adri Mehmeti, Julian Hall, and Tanner Rosborough. These three players are eighteen or seventeen years old, which fits with the rules of the tournament that CONCACAF has.
For the team next summer, it would be even harder, as the Olympics allow for three players who are overage (over the age of 23).
There are even more questions about the U20 World Cup hosts as there is a major war happening in World Soccer.
As it has been headline news that UEFA has said that the entire Confederation would boycott any FIFA tournament, this would include the co-host of the tournament, Azerbaijan.
