The AFC East division has long been one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL, with each team boasting a rich history and passionate fanbase.
The 2024 season promises to be no different, with three of the four competitors harboring very real hopes of not only the divisional title but perhaps even the Lombardi.

For the New York Jets, they will be hoping the 2024 season is the campaign in which they come of age. They are on the longest postseason drought of anybody in the entire league and haven’t reached the playoffs in 13 years.

However, both the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins have emerged as heavyweights within the conference, and they could be tough nuts to crack throughout the campaign.

Here are the bookies odds on all four teams’ hopes of divisional glory next term and whether they can live up to the billing.

Buffalo Bills // +160

Ever since quarterback Josh Allen headed to Highmark Stadium as the seventh overall pick of the 2017 draft, the Buffalo Bills have emerged as genuine contenders once more. They have topped the AFC East in each of the last four years, and they are the favorites to retain the crown once more in 2024.

New York Jets

The New York State side has been a dominant force in the division over the past few years, largely due to their explosive offense led by their former University of Wyoming standout under center. The 28-year-old, who continues to develop into one of the league’s premier quarterbacks, is supported by a talented receiving corps, including Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis.

One thing that may be of slight concern to head coach Sean McDermott is his side’s difficult-looking start to the campaign. Within the first five weeks of the campaign, they have to travel to their divisional rival Miami Dolphins, last season’s AFC top seed Baltimore Ravens, and last term’s stars of the postseason, the Houston Texans. And it is that week five trip to the Lone Star state that could prove to be pivotal.

The week 5 NFL betting odds for the 2024 season haven’t yet been published as bookies wait to see how the early season form shakes out, but the Super Bowl futures certainly have. They currently make the Texans +1000 third favorites for the Lombard, while the Bills are priced at a much longer +1600, suggesting that they could be in for a tough test when they head to NRG Stadium. If they head into week six with a record of 2-3, then there’s a very real chance they may not win the division for the first time in half a decade.

New York Jets // +190

The New York Jets are arguably the most intriguing team heading into 2024. The biggest story, of course, is the return to fitness of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The four-time MVP winner brought a wealth of experience and championship pedigree with him when he was traded from the Green Bay Packers last season, and many expected him to lead the Jets back toward the upper echelons of the AFC. Unfortunately for him, however, his maiden season at MetLife season ended just six minutes into his debut with a season-ending Achilles injury, and the Jets once again went on to miss out on the playoffs.

This year, he is back fully fit and is expected to be firing on all cylinders at the ripe old age of 40. And he will have no shortage of weapons at his disposal. With wide receivers Garrett Wilson and Corey Davis, and running back Breece Hall forming a dynamic offensive trio, Rodgers is expected to complement them nicely. If the quarter can garner an understanding early doors, then there is no reason to think that they cannot snap their abysmal postseason streak and march towards Ceaser SuperDome and Super Bowl LIX.

Miami Dolphins // +200

The Miami Dolphins are another team that can’t be overlooked in the race for the AFC East title. The Floridians have steadily improved under head coach Mike McDaniel, and it looked as though they would claim the division for the first time in 15 years last season. Ultimately, disastrous late-season form and a final-day defeat against the Bills ended those hopes, but there can be no denying how far they have come in recent years.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has shown significant progress over the last few years, culminating in the last season. In 2023, he topped the entire league in terms of throwing yards, and he’s expected to be up there once again this term. He has support in superstar wide received Tyreek Kll, while if the incoming Odell Beckham Jr. can display the kind of form he used to show at MetLife with the New York Giants, then the Dolphins certainly could be a problem next season.

New England Patriots // +2300

The New England Patriots find themselves in an unfamiliar position as the rank outsiders in the AFC East after a disastrous campaign in 2023. Last year, the Foxborough outfit picked up just four wins all season, leaving them with the worst record in the entire conference and the second-worst in the league. That prompted the powers that be at Gillette Stadium to part ways with long-term head coach Bill Belichick, and it remains to be seen how they fare without their greatest-ever head coach.
