QB Daniel Jones is out for the season with a torn ACL. Tommy DeVito stepped in and as HC Brian Daboll said, “Tommy played well at times.” With backup QB Tyrod Taylor on the injured list for the rest of November with injured ribs, the Giants signed QB Matt Barkley to the practice squad last week, then elevated him to the 53-man roster this week to replace Jones. Is it Matt Barkley’s time?

Matt Barkley hasn’t seen an NFL field in a regular season game since 2020, three seasons ago.  But, he was coached by Brian Daboll for at least three seasons in Buffalo before Dabs became the Giants Head Coach.  He knows Daboll’s system.  He’s getting a crash course in dusting off that knowledge and applying it back on the field of play.  Is he a better option than DeVito who has been with the Giants all through the preseason to now?  The Giants coaches will use this week to make that determination.  In addition, the Giants signed QB Jacob Eason to the practice squad which gives them the third QB on the current roster.

Some fans are stirring up the images of the 2021 season when Jones went down, then backups Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm could do nothing on offense.  Thoughts of the Giants executing quarterback sneaks from their own 2-yard line because then head coach Joe Judge couldn’t trust the offense to get a first down.  No, no.  Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka won’t let that happen again.  They are too good offensive minds and will craft plays to the quarterbacks’ strengths.  DeVito hasn’t had much, if any practice time with the first string offense before this week.  It’s quite possible, Daboll announces DeVito as his starter with Matt Barkley as his backup.

But I just can’t wait for Giants announcer, Bob Papa to say, “Barkley takes the snap, hands it to Barkley who gets the first down!”
