The Giants are entering the 2023 season with the highest expectations they have had in years.
Their first opponent? The Dallas Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys have been defeated just once since 2016. That victory came in 2020 when Dallas started backup QB Andy Dalton.
To prepare for their upcoming Sunday Night Football opener, let’s look back at their 1994 Christmas Eve meeting.
The Giants came into this game, having not defeated the Cowboys since 1991. The Cowboys, meanwhile, were back-to-back Super Bowl champs and looking to 3-peat (spoiler alert: they didn’t). The Giants had an up-and-down season and needed this victory and some outside help to get into the playoffs. The Giants came out in this game swinging, getting after Cowboys Quarterback Troy Aikman early and often. This prompted the Cowboys to pull Aikman out of the game, not wanting to risk any injury. They were already sitting a banged-up Emmit Smith. Going into the half, the Giants had a 10-3 lead after a Brad Daluiso field goal and a Mike Sherrard 49-yard touchdown pass from Dave Brown.
The Cowboys would fight back after a Blair Thomas touchdown run would tie the game in the 3rd quarter. Later on in the 3rd quarter, was when the Giants would make the play that would ultimately decide the game.
The Giants had Dallas backed up deep in their own territory when future All-Pro linebacker Jessie Armstead stripped Cowboys backup QB Rodney Peete. The Giants attempted to jump on the ball in the endzone but couldn’t before the ball went out the back of the endzone. This gave the Giants a 12-10 lead. Another Daluiso field goal in the 4th quarter gave the Giants a 15-10 lead. They never let go of that lead, and the Giants defeated the Cowboys for the first time in 3 years.
Sunday night, the Giants will open up their 2023 season in front of a raucous home crowd starving for a win. It has been 7 years since the Giants defeated a Dak Prescott-led Cowboys team. Every Giants fan in the world is ready for this win.
Let’s Get Ready for an upset win over the Cowboys, just as the Giants did 19 years ago.
