Baker Mayfield has never been one to shy away from talking.
In fact, it’s part of the reason why so many people love him. He’s competitive, and he is not afraid to speak his mind. Whether it is sticking the Oklahoma flag in the ground at Ohio State, grabbing his crotch and cursing out Kansas, or getting in Hue Jackson’s face after he was fired by the Browns. Baker Mayfield is who he is. That’s all well and good until it is done to you. Well, on multiple occasions, Baker has taken some shots at the New York Giants.
Let’s take a little hop in the time machine and go back to 2019. The Giants had just traded Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns, who Baker Mayfield was of course the Quarterback of at the time. Baker was defending/hyping up his new wide receiver, but in doing so took a shot at the Giants fan base. Baker was quoted saying, “He’s here to play in front of fans who actually care, who will actually show up to every game and pack the stadium and love him for who he is.” That is very funny considering there are still fans of the Giants who absolutely adore Odell Beckham and are wishing he comes back to the Giants now! I won’t even get into the fact that Giants fans consistently are among the top 5 in attendance within the NFL. Baker also took a shot at our Quarterback as well! After the Giants took Daniel Jones in the 2019 draft, Baker was quoted saying, “I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones. Blows my mind. Some people overthink it. That’s where people go wrong. They forget you’ve gotta win.” Now, Baker’s comments still have a chance of being correct, but it’s funny looking back at them knowing it wouldn’t be long before Baker would be getting shipped out of Cleveland.
Is this blog petty? Yeah of course. Does any of this really matter? No, not really. But as a fan, I like to find reasons to root even harder for the Giants. Hand up also, I forgot about these quotes until @DaEntertainah85 on twitter reminded me of them. Now that I do remember them though, I hope the Giants blow out the Panthers even more then I wanted them earlier. You see, the only time Baker played in MetLife was 2020 when we didn’t have any fans in attendance. Well, that’s not the case this time.
Wink Martindale called for Giants fans to get loud on Sunday. Well if you don’t want to do it for Wink, do it to show Baker how well we pack out a stadium, and how much we really do care since he doesn’t believe we do.
