When you’re the New York Yankees, you’re connected to every free agent and it’s no different this offseason. There have been reports that the Yankees have “shown interest” in nearly every big name out on the market including Carlos Correa, Corey Seager and Justin Verlander. They’ve also been reported as a major player in the Matt Olson sweepstakes. However, this is what happens every year, so it should not be a surprise and it should not get Yankees fans anywhere near fired up. Until these guys sit on the dotted line, it’s all rumors.

Now, let’s talk about some of those rumors. Matt Olson seems to be the most enticing player Yankee fans want the team to acquire. He’s young, 27 years old, with two years of arbitration left and is currently in a lame duck situation in Oakland where they just lost their manager of over a decade. No reason not to think that the A’s are going to blow things up and likely listen for offers on every player.

Olson is a left-handed hitting, athletic, great defensive first baseman. What has been at the forefront of the Yankees’ lack of success in the postseason over the last half decade has been their hitting, especially coming out of the first base position. They employed the likes of Chris Carter and Greg Bird at that position before improving slightly with Voit on the offensive side and then turning to Anthony Rizzo on the defensive side this past season.

Olson checks all the boxes, not to mention a swing built for Yankee Stadium. Someone that pulls the ball and was able to hit 39 home runs last season playing half his games at the Oakland Coliseum.

Anthony Rizzo is not a bad second option, however he is five years older than Olson and would likely command a large amount of money. If the Yankees are looking to replace shortstop in the free agent market, they’ll likely have to spend to get the guy they want. Hence, getting Olson is a cheaper option in the short term and you worry about trying to re-sign him after the 2023 season.
