The Giants were able to pull this fan base out from the abyss with a blowout win against Carolina last Sunday. Following that victory, the Giants face a daunting task as they head into the back to back AFC Champions home field in Kansas City. The Chiefs are 10 point favorites in this game, making the Giants heavy underdogs. If the Giants want to reignite the fire in this season, an upset win in Arrowhead would certainly accomplish that goal. The Giants need to look no farther than their 1992 matchup with the Chiefs for motivation.
The 1992 Giants were not a good football team. They were in year two of the very brief Ray Handley era. The heir apparent to Bill Parcells was on his way out the door when the Chiefs came into town in week 16 as 7.5 point favorites. In shocking fashion, the Giants handedly beat a 9-5 Chiefs team that had a chance to clinch a playoff birth with a win. The 5-9 Giants were able to rush for 217 yards on the ground on the backs of Rodney Hampton, Jarrod Bunch, and OJ Anderson. Hampton, who is criminally underrated, ran for 3 touchdowns in this game. Jeff Hostetler also finished the game with a QB rating of 127.9, tossing 131 yards and 2 touchdowns to Mark Ingram and Chris Calloway. What makes this offensive performance even more impressive is that the Chiefs finished 1992 as the 5th best defense in the NFL. The Giants defense showed glimpses of their dominant 1980s days and held the Chiefs to just 14 points offensively (one of the Chiefs touchdowns was a punt recovery in the Giants end zone). In a game they had no business winning, the Giants were able to knock off the Chiefs 35-21.
If you thought this game was an upset, just imagine the Giants beating the Chiefs this Monday. The Chiefs are looking the worst they have in a long time, and if this coaching staff can create a game plan to allow both sides of the ball to succeed like they did against Carolina, the Giants have a much better chance at winning this game than many people think.
Do what you did back in ’92 Giants, and shock the world.
