It’s no secret that the New York Yankees have been hit with every bad thing possible this season, both on and off the field.
Three separate COVID-19 outbreaks, injuries, and underperforming have all hit the Yankees at one point or another in 2021.
Things have not been all bad as of late.
The Yankees have won nine of their last 10 series heading into the final two games with the Chicago White Sox and soon will see the return of the rest of their roster.
One of the biggest losses has been Anthony Rizzo. In his first week as a Yankee, it seemed like he got a big hit every single night and jump-started this team. But Rizzo caught the Yankee bug that is and remains COVID-19 and may take some time for him to come back but make no mistake, the Rizzo acquisition was unexpected yet has produced a high reward to this point.
The Yankees have an entire team on the IL right now, including Rizzo, Gary Sanchez, Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery, Corey Kluber, Aroldis Chapman, Gleyber Torres, Luis Severino, Domingo German, and Gio Urshela. The good news is that most of those players will return in the near future and likely by the end of the month.
Sanchez, Cole, and Montgomery are all expected to be due back by the beginning of next week once they recover from COVID-19. Rizzo may take a little longer since he has felt symptoms throughout his diagnosis. Gio Urshela is also looking promising for a return next week, as is Luis Severino. Sevy will make one more rehab start tonight, with the Yankees targeting a return next Wednesday for the final game of the Red Sox series.
Rizzo, Aroldis Chapman, Domingo German, Corey Kluber, and Gleyber Torres all seem to be a few weeks away, but most, if not all, should be back before the September stretch run.
Getting all of these guys back in bits and pieces is like making trades for them. Outside of Jameson Taillon, the entire starting rotation is on the IL. The slow additions to the lineup like Rizzo, Sanchez, Torres, and Urshela suddenly make the Yankee lineup much deeper just in time for the stretch run.
Winning each series is the most important at this point. Sweeps are nice, but we’ve seen how much just winning each series has done to the Yankees in terms of making up ground.
Give the New, New York Yankees a full month together to make up a few games for a playoff spot.
If their strong stretch of play continues into October, I will not count the Yankees out to make a big run.
