Free agency has officially begun in the NHL, and plenty of moves have been made.
The New York Rangers have made a few moves so far.
The team traded Brett Howden for Nick DeSimone and a 2022 4th-round pick.
The Rangers also traded a 2022 7th-round pick for Barclay Goodrow. Lastly, the Rangers traded Pavel Buchnevich for Sammy Blais and a 2022 2nd-round pick.
The team didn’t stop there.
The Rangers signed Patrik Nemeth to a 3-year contract and Jarred Tinordi to a 2-year contract.
Patrik Nemeth is a 29-year-old defenseman. Nemeth played for the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, and the Detroit Red Wings. Nemeth is going to be the grit of this team. The offensive isn’t there, but the defense will be kept tight under him.
Standing at 6’4″ and weighing around 227 lbs, Nemeth knows how to use his body and will be able to make perfectly timed hits.
This could be valuable to the Rangers as the team doesn’t have that kind of grit. While it might not be the most necessary thing in hockey, the Rangers could use it to their advantage.
Jarred Tinordi is a 29-year-old defenseman. Tinordi played for the Montreal Canadiens, Arizona Coyotes, Nashville Predators, and the Boston Bruins.
Again, this is not an offensive defenseman. Tinordi is another enforcer; now the Rangers can have two enforcers to keep things in line. Tinordi fought Tom Wilson last season after Wilson injured Tinordis teammate Brandon Carlo. Whether the Rangers did this intentionally or not, the signing was a smart choice.
It is hard to tell whether the Rangers are done or not in free agency.
Many rumors have been made about the team potentially trading for Jack Eichel. Nothing has been confirmed yet as other teams are interested as well.
The Rangers could still make more moves and add some more potential to this team.
There hasn’t been a major move yet, but these signings have added depth to this team.
