It was announced that the New York Rangers had won the 2020 NHL Draft and will be picking number one overall.
The Blueshirts do have another first-round pick as well that many fans seem to be forgetting about. New York will get to choose number 24th overall as well allowing the organization to choose another top prospect.
The team’s main focus should be rebuilding defense.
The Rangers are stacked up with the offense, but fall flat with defense.
Besides possibly Fox and Trouba, I think the Rangers need to work around their defense and it can be done with this pick. While the Rangers offensive stars were quiet during the series against the Carolina Hurricanes, the defense let up goals that could have been stopped. Defense hurt the team the most during the series.
Kaiden Guhle is a left-handed defenseman that is eligible for the draft and is predicted to be chosen at 24th overall by the Rangers.
Guhle has been described as a shutdown defenseman who has a hard shot when needed to be offensive. Guhle is 6’3 and 187 lbs which allow him to be an intimidating defenseman.
Kaiden Guhle has played in the WHL for the Prince Albert Raiders.
In the 2019-2020 season, Guhle had 11 goals and 29 assists in 64 games.
There is so much talk about the Rangers’ first pick, but this could be one that is just as important. The defense needs to be fixed and using the younger players plus drafting one can help this team grow. Adam Fox, K’Andre Miller, Nils Lundkvist, and possibly Kaiden Guhle can really turn the Rangers defense around.
It’s a group of young players, but all are talented and deserve the chance to show it.
With the Rangers having two first-round draft picks, one pick should be focused on finding a strong defenseman and that can be Guhle.
