NHL fans everywhere were surprised to see the results of the order for this year’s NHL Draft.
Many teams that fans thought would be in the number one spot were not, and it was announced that a team in the playoffs would win the top draft pick.

The New York Rangers, being a part of the playoffs, could possibly be that team.

The NHL has created a “second phase”. In this phase, teams that lose in the play-in round of the playoffs will take part and have a chance to get the number one draft pick. If the Rangers lose the play-in round against the Carolina Hurricanes then the chances for the top draft pick go up. While a playoff run would be great for the Rangers, a high draft pick is beneficial as well.

The Rangers, although the team was quickly rebuilt, still needs tweaking. The defense needs to strengthen and there are talented, young defensemen eligible for the draft. Jamie Drysdale is a prospect that would be a great fit. Drysdale is a smooth, fast skater that can handle the puck easily, with a strong ability to play in the offensive zone.

The Rangers could also go in the offensive route and choose a prospect like Alexis Lafreniere. It’ll deepen their offensive prospect pool and let it continue to grow each year.

I’d say the main goal is to win and push through the playoffs as much as this team could. The next goal will then be the first draft pick. Whichever happens, this team has a bright future and can be truly great in years to come.

This is a great opportunity for the Rangers. Even if they lose in the playoffs, the team can still win with the draft.
Time will tell what will happen, but this offseason will be different but interesting.
