Last year the New York Rangers traded their captain, Ryan Mcdonagh, to the Tampa Bay Lightning. This left the Rangers with no team captain and they didn’t plan on naming one any time soon.

The team had five alternate captains at the start of this season. This included Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Jesper Fast, and Marc Staal. With the Mats Zuccarello trade that left four alternate captains.

This has left many to wonder who could be the next captain of this team. Many felt that Zuccarello would be a great fit for captain because of what he does on the ice and also off the ice. After the trade, this question of who could be captain grew even more.

This team does have quite a few options for who could be captain, even after the Zuccarello trade happened. The Rangers have quite a few veterans that have been on the team for some time now, and each could be a future captain.

Most fans want Zibanejad or Kreider has future captains and that can potentially happen. Both are fan favorites and that is because of their talent. There are only a few days left in the season, and both players combined for 57 goals and 66 assists. Both players have had a very impressive season and if you add that to their leadership roles as alternate captains, they can become good head captains.

Coach David Quinn has said before that he is not in any rush to pick a captain, and he shouldn’t be. The Rangers might not need one at this exact moment. They could be waiting for the end of this rebuild or waiting for the season end, no one really knows.

Players we might expect to be captain, might not even be picked or may not even be with the team after a certain time. It’s hard to tell when the change will come, but as of now, the Rangers have a good lineup of alternate captains.
